In Focus: Louis 'Razor' Robinson

With the British Heavyweight scene really catching fire again over the last couple of years, everyone is on the look out for the next big thing. Asif Vali believes he may just have found that man.

Louis 'Razor' Robinson makes his professional debut under the guidance Vali, the man partly responsible for Amir Khan's rise to the top.

From speaking to both men the ambition is clear as is the time frame within which they believe they can achieve it.

But where did Vali find such a promising young heavyweight?

'I never had an amateur fight, I use to go down as a kid and train with the squad and spar etc but just didn't interest me at the time to compete. Then over the past few years I've had 8 white collar bouts and won all of those I know the standard of some white collar is absolutely shocking but the lads I was in with were half decent and a couple of ex pro's.'

What is clear from speaking to both men, that despite Robinson's large frame, he's 6ft6 and currently weighs over 19stone, his natural style is tailor made to entertain.

Robinson goes on to tell us why that is, 'I've got a pretty exciting style to be honest, I can mix it up or use my 6ft6 frame and box off the back foot, a few people say my style is like Hughie's (Fury).'

But what made Vali take, what many would perceive to be, such a big gamble on someone so untested?

'Louis, even without an amateur background, you just have to look at his video- how he uses the ring well and he is a hard hitting in and out boxer.'

So where exactly is it that this new partnership believe they can get to in the pro game?

'I truly believe I will win a British title and anything beyond that is a bonus but who knows how far I will go, you get out what you put in, I've got a good team around me so if i listen to my team and give 10000% in the gym the sky really is the limit!'

A sentiment echoed by manager Vali, 'as long as Louis grafts in the ring I see no reason why we can't get to the British title within 18 months of his career.'

With the likes of David Allen, Sam Sexton and Ian Lewison all already in contention for that top spot at British level, is there anyone that Team Razor has their eye on in particular?

'Louis wants to fight Dave Allen right now, I have to keep him on a leash and release him slowly' Vali tells us.

Whereas Robinson makes it clear that he won't settle for just one of the top British names.

'Hand on my heart mate I respect anyone who gets in that ring but there is not one heavyweight at domestic level who I am worried about. If I don't mop up at domestic level in the next 24 months I don't deserve to be in that ring because there are far too many heavyweights at domestic level getting hype and these lads wouldn't get near me. Roll on my start in this so I can show everyone what I'm about and upset the division!'

We couldn't let one of Britain's new heavyweights go without asking for his thoughts on Joshua V Klitschko, and Robinson was just as honest about that one.

'It's a tough one for me to call, it depends if they show each other too much respect, but I'd love to see Wlad win to get everyone off the AJ hype train. Fury beat Wlad and everyone was like "oh he's old and past it" now AJ is fighting him it's all of a sudden "the biggest fight in the world and AJ is fighting the best out there". Bore off (Eddie) Hearn!'

Welcome to the Heavyweight scene Razor! It's certainly shaping up to be an enjoyable journey.

Robinson makes his debut against an as yet unnamed opponent on April 14th in Manchester.
